As a food scientist, I am often asked “who is a food scientist”. Here is a quick answer about who we are and what we do.

Who We Are

A food scientist is a professional who studies the science of food. They use their knowledge of science to solve various problems in the food industry.

What We Do and Where To Find Us

Food scientists develop products to meet the specific nutritional needs of consumers and improve the shelf life and safety of food products. Some work in marketing and sales, promoting products, or helping customers understand how to use ingredients such as preservatives and other additives. Other food scientists work for private entities or the government, providing consultancy or regulatory services to the food industry, while others teach in colleges and universities.

Education and Training Requirements to Become a Food Scientist

A food scientist typically has a bachelor’s degree in food science, although some may have a degree in agricultural science, biochemistry, or another related scientific discipline. Many food scientists complete internships or apprenticeships with food manufacturers, and some also have experience working in restaurants or other food service settings. Some may also choose to pursue advanced degrees, such as a master’s degree or Ph.D., which can lead to careers in research or academia.
