Health Is More Than Just Not Being Sick

I recently heard someone say, “We only have one vehicle to take us through this world, and that vehicle is our body.” That statement is absolutely true.

Taking care of yourself, however, means more than just avoiding illness. Health includes physical, emotional, social, spiritual, and even occupational well-being. True health is not just the absence of disease. It is about living well.

One of the best places to start taking care of your body is with what you eat and how active you are.

Why Diet and Exercise Matter

Many common diseases are closely linked to poor eating habits. In the United States, the leading causes of death include heart disease and cancer. Both have strong connections to diet.

Other major health conditions, such as diabetes and stroke, are also linked to how and what we eat. While food is not the only factor, it plays a major role in long-term health.

Eating well and staying active are not about perfection. They are about making better choices most of the time.

The Six Classes of Nutrients

To stay healthy, your body needs the right balance of nutrients. There are six major classes of nutrients: carbohydrates, lipids (fats), proteins, vitamins, minerals, and water.

Carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins are called macronutrients because the body needs them in larger amounts. Vitamins and minerals are called micronutrients because they are needed in smaller amounts.

Each group plays a different role in keeping your body functioning properly.

Understanding Energy and Calories

Macronutrients provide energy for the body. Carbohydrates are usually the main energy source.

The energy we get from food is measured in kilocalories. In nutrition, we usually just call these Calories with a capital C.

One gram of carbohydrates provides 4 Calories. One gram of protein also provides 4 Calories. One gram of fat provides 9 Calories.

Alcohol provides 7 Calories per gram, but it is not considered a nutrient because it does not support body functions.

The Role of Protein and Fat

Protein can provide energy, but its main role is building and repairing tissues. Muscles, enzymes, hormones, blood components, and parts of the immune system are all made from proteins.

Lipids include fats and oils. If a lipid is solid at room temperature, it is considered a fat. If it is liquid, it is considered an oil.

Fats serve as a backup energy source, help absorb certain vitamins, protect organs, and insulate the body.

Vitamins and Minerals Made Simple

Vitamins are classified as either fat-soluble or water-soluble. The fat-soluble vitamins are A, D, E, and K. A simple way to remember this is to picture “ADEK” relaxing on a deck.

Water-soluble vitamins include vitamin C and the B-vitamin complex. The B vitamins are actually a group of eight different vitamins, including B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9, and B12.

Minerals are individual elements absorbed directly into the body. They are classified as major or trace minerals.

Major minerals are needed in amounts greater than 100 milligrams per day. Trace minerals are needed in smaller amounts.

The major minerals include sodium, potassium, chlorine, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and sulfur.

A helpful way to remember them is the phrase: “Salty potato chips contain plenty more salt.”

How Nutrition Recommendations Are Determined

So how do we know what and how much to eat?

Health professionals use a system called Dietary Reference Intakes. These guidelines are designed to help healthy people meet their nutrient needs and reduce the risk of disease.

They include several values, such as the Estimated Average Requirement, Recommended Dietary Allowance, Adequate Intake, and Tolerable Upper Intake Level.

They also include estimates for daily energy needs and recommended ranges for carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.

For adults, a healthy diet generally includes about 45 to 65 percent of calories from carbohydrates, 20 to 35 percent from fats, and 10 to 35 percent from protein.

How Health Professionals Assess Nutrition

Health professionals use several tools to assess nutritional status.

They may measure vital signs such as blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and respiration. Blood and urine tests may also be used.

They often look for physical signs involving the skin, hair, eyes, tongue, and nails.

Measurements such as height, weight, and waist circumference may be compared to population standards.

Health questionnaires are also common. These may ask about diet, physical activity, medical history, and lifestyle habits.

Undernutrition, Overnutrition, and Balance

A health assessment may show undernutrition or overnutrition.

Undernutrition can occur when a person eats too little or when the body does not absorb nutrients properly. When intake is too low, it is called a primary deficiency. When absorption is the problem, it is called a secondary deficiency.

Overnutrition usually means consuming too much energy or too many nutrients.

Both extremes can negatively affect health.

Food, Genes, and the Future of Health

There is growing interest in a field called nutrigenomics. This area of science explores how nutrients can influence gene activity.

Researchers are studying whether certain nutrients can turn genes on or off in ways that support health or reduce disease risk.

While this research is promising, there are no shortcuts. The foundation of good health is still balanced eating and consistent healthy choices.

As the saying goes, “Let food be your medicine and your medicine be your food.” Choosing to eat well is one of the most powerful ways to support long-term health.
